Peoples £50M - UP Black Country
Vote Black Country for £50million
In June 2005 the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) and ITV announced a competition to find the winner of a £50 million National Lottery grant. The search was on for a groundbreaking project that would inspire communities to revitalise the areas where they live.
Of the thirty-three entries to the competition, only four were selected to take part in the live final. These were:
• Connect 2 – a UK-wide project that aims to improve local travel in 79 communities;
• The Edge representing the next evolution of the Eden Project in Cornwall;
• Sherwood Park - protecting one of the world’s most famous forests in Nottinghamshire
• The Black Country Urban Park - the only West Midlands project to be shortlisted.
With an initial endorsement of £16million from Advantage West Midlands, the Black Country project looks to take what is perceived as one of the most degraded landscapes in the UK and make it an international exemplar of comprehensive environment-led regeneration of the highest quality.
The Black Country Consortium are leading on a comprehensive marketing campaign to include extensive press coverage, high profile regional events and roadshows. West Midlander’s Frank Skinner and Lenny Henry are set to go back to their roots and show their support for the bid during their stand up tours in late November.
